# Digital sovereignty

Technology should guarantee **freedom and ownership** to the individual. People should own their digital life, whether it's money or other assets like their personal context, rather than depending on others.

## Why it matters to me

It started with Bitcoin, which Mr. Corey first told me about at [Novato High School](https://massimoalbarello.context-use.com/p/about/chapters/2015-2016_novato/story) and which I kept learning about through books like [Mastering Bitcoin](https://aantonop.com/books/) — that is what got me passionate about technology that empowers the individual, years before [the distributed systems course](https://massimoalbarello.context-use.com/p/about/chapters/2020-2024_zurich/2020-2021_getting-into-distributed-systems) finally let me get into the weeds and understand how it actually worked.

It became concrete work rather than an interest with [my master's thesis at DISCO](https://massimoalbarello.context-use.com/p/about/chapters/2020-2024_zurich/2022-2023_master-thesis-at-disco) and then building [Internet Computer infrastructure](https://massimoalbarello.context-use.com/p/about/projects/2020-2024_omnia/2023_internet-computer-infrastructure/story). Even [Fabric](https://massimoalbarello.context-use.com/p/about/projects/2024-2026_fabric/intro) was deeply influenced by the idea of bringing down the infamous big tech data silos to free the individual's digital life.

It is also the whole point of [context-use](https://massimoalbarello.context-use.com/p/about/projects/2026_context-use/intro): if your context lives inside somebody else's product, you end up picking your agents based on where your context happens to sit rather than on which one actually serves you best. That matters more the more the world becomes one [ubiquitous computer](https://massimoalbarello.context-use.com/p/topics/ubiquitous-computing/intro).
